The Color of Your Tree Matters More Than You Think
Take a walk around your yard this month and look up. What color are your trees' leaves?
A healthy, thriving tree should have deep, rich, dark green foliage. If what you're seeing instead is a pale, washed-out, or yellowish lime green, that's not normal. That's your tree asking for help.
This discoloration has a name: chlorosis
What is Chlorosis?
Chlorosis is a condition in which a tree's leaves lose their normal dark green color and turn a pale, yellowish, or lime green. The word itself comes from the Greek word for "pale green," and once you know what to look for, it's hard to miss.
The cause comes down to chlorophyll, the pigment that gives their leaves their green color and drives photosynthesis. When a tree can't produce enough chlorophyll, its leaves fade. And when leaves can't photosynthesize properly, the tree can't produce the energy it needs to thrive.
Chlorosis is most often caused by:
Iron deficiency the most common culprit, often due to high soil pH that prevents iron uptake even when it's present in the soil
Manganese or zinc deficiency
Poor soil drainage that suffocates roots
Compacted soil that restricts root growth and nutrient absorption
Root damage from construction, grade changes, or overly aggressive lawn care
What Trees Are Most Vulnerable?
While chlorosis can affect many species, some trees are significantly more prone to it than others. In our area, keep a close eye on them.
Oak trees -- Pin oaks in particular are notorious for chlorosis. Their leaves develop a distinctive pattern: the veins stay green while the tissue between them turns pale yellow or lime green. This "interveinal chlorosis" is a classic sign.
Birch trees -- Already a somewhat delicate species, birches are susceptible to iron and manganese deficiency, especially in compacted or poorly drained soils.
Maple trees -- Silver maples and red maples commonly show chlorosis symptoms, particularly in lawns where soil compaction and high pH are frequent problems.
If you have any of these trees on your property and they're not looking their darkest green right now, it's worth having them evaluated.
In our region, iron chlorosis is especially common. Wisconsin soils can have high pH levels, which lock up iron and make it unavailable to trees, even if the nutrient is technically in the ground.
Why June Is the Critical Month
June is when chlorosis becomes visible, and it's no coincidence. As trees push out a full canopy of new leaves and ramp up their energy demands, any underlying deficiency or stress gets amplified. The tree is working hard, drawing heavily on available nutrients, and if those nutrients aren't accessible, the leaves will show it.
