What should you do if you have ash trees?

Treatment Options:

  1. Soil insecticide treatments- These treatments are injected into the soil around the base of a tree.  Treatments usually take place in the spring or fall.  The treatment is a one year dosage and generally works best for smaller diameter trees.
  2. Trunk injections treatments- A pressurized solution of insecticide is pumped directly into the trunk of the tree.  This treatment is a stronger product, and provides quicker uptake and is a two year dosage and is generally preferred for larger diameter ash trees.

Management of ash trees and emerald ash borer may also include preventative removal of ash trees and replacement with non-ash tree species.   Often times on properties with large number of ash trees it may be best to develop a multi-year strategy that includes using multiple treatment techniques, removal of some ash tree trees and replanting with non-ash tree species.
